This is a quote from the BBC web site, stating that following their arrest, the girls said:


"It was basically like a set-up. They didn't tell us nothing, we didn't think nothing, 'cos basically we are innocent. We don't know nothing about this drugs and stuff."

If that's actually what they did say, it's a good indication of their level of intelligence, so it's quite possible they were duped.

Aren't schoolchildren taught about the true meaning of double negatives, these days?

Schools are more yer holding pens than bastions of grammatical excellence nowadays. Or anything else for that matter...just look how dumbed-down University Challenge has become! Poor Bamber must feel sick to his stomach...!sick!

In some parts of Estuary England, double negatives are de rigeur---and woe betide anyone who points out the error of their ways.

Another fortnight and I think they may be taking it more seriously. Too many Brits who commit offences (from petty noise nuisance to drug smuggling) when abroad seem to think that, because they are on holiday, British law still holds sway.

I half expected WZR to point out that the use of language changes continually over time and that in Shakespearean times double negatives were commonly used to emphasise a point.

Their use just really annoys me. But I'm at that age when everything does.
