A 'Good Education' - Why?

Post by Deano! »

I've never understood why a 'good education' is so highly regarded or even what that term is supposed to mean exactly. I can see why it can lead to a better job, but many people with high qualifications are in dead end jobs while early school leavers sometimes do fabulously well.

But the main thing that interests me is when the term " an educated man" is used to imply that that person is simply better than so-called uneducated ( usually people with trade skills or the like ).

I work in a medical research institute and its crawling with PhD holders and medical doctors. I can see no difference in their general character from anyone else. Some of them are unbelievably daft when it comes to simple tasks.

Perhaps the term 'educated man' is applied by people whose interests are served by creating a myth that expensive university courses will get you a seat in heaven.

PS. - If I've made any spelling mistakes please point them out with your nose in the air, your eyes half closed and a sneer of disgust on your face. Thanks.

Education in the UK is a big industry which gives a lot of people a good standard of living that is why so much money is poured into it, you will learn much more after you leave school than you will ever learn in a classroom !cool!

I've got a degree in accountancy which took 5 years to achieve at university, but I've never been given the opportunity to use the skills I studied for.

It's a hangover from Victorian Britain. Those that were 'educated men' would not be corrupted and behave properly like gentlemen, not like the 'un-educated working class'.

Deano,

When I had an English Limited company Videx Ltd I used to receive CVs every week from people with Phds, MA,s, BA,s, and so on asking for a job at a certain salary. My standard reply was "Yes you can work for me on a percentage basis. If you sell then you will get a percentage" surprisingly no-one ever accepted the offer.

Yes, that's what I'm getting at. Its as if having a degree in pure mathmatics means you would never drink and drive and thus need not stop at police roadside tests. That's for welders.
