I think Jacques meant connect your pc and hub with an earthnet cable. You should have an earthnet port somewhere if your motherboard's/laptop's not more than 8 years old!

Not sure if you'll have to inactivate the wi-fi contoller card though so there's no conflicts.

I'd be seeking out a site that can test your connections performance to determine if its BTs fault or your computers but before that I'd be running some anti-virus & anti-spyware just to make sure you haven't caught some virus/malware/trojan/hijacker etc

See lizards locker in the miscellany section(right down the bottom) for the sites/programs that might help

cheers

I've run an anti virus today and its fine. My hubs been off for most of the day, the lights are just flashing, which to me sounds like it's BT fault. Its come back on but again pictures are slow as hell.

This must be a connection problem shouldn't it?

when it was off it said on the Hub manager that the DSL line is not synchronised, any idea what the hell that is?

Cheers

So you have scanned for malware as well?

malware is as bad as viruses IMHO

so running programs like adaware, spybot,cw shredder are a must

last resort is a program called hijack this which you can post a report to numerous forums and they will diagnose any problems that need to be removed

I'm no expert given I've only ever connected via dial-up
so your best bet is a broadband forum to test your connection or post your problems

Hey big ass, most modem/router problems resolve by unplugging them, in the case of a modem, uninstall then re install , same for a wireless router, unplug it from the mains, unplug all the cables, then turn your puter on.
once it,s on start plugging stuff back in and turn the router back on, sometimes things just get out of sync, shit happens, your either getting broadband or your not, there is really no halfway traffic can slow the bandwith down but rarely cuts it off..

There is another reason for changes in speed which sits with the hardware that BT employ to determine what speed your line can take.

I've read a lot on the subject as I have the problem constantly but I won't bore you with the details but essentially there is this device that when your link is established it works out what you best connection speed should be.

If the results of the test show your line quality has dropped since last time then the max speed is reduced by a whole 1/2 Mbit until for a period of days (normally 5) the line quality stays the same or improves then it will go back up 1/2 Mbit.

This means to say that you could quite quickly have the speed drop to nothing but then take forever (of not never) go back up again.

Apparently a lot if ISPs employ these things and you can get them to reset you back to the maximum speed rated for your line to get things going again but once more you will eventually drop-down if you line is bad in the future.

After having spent nearly two weeks at BT's request producing quality reports using their own speed test site test sites and playing 'ServiceDesk email ping-pong' with their support staff, I finally got to speak with BT (or rather some out-sourced company employee in Bangalore) on a 30 mimute call only to be told that the problem was down to my internal wiring.

I argued that the internal wiring and everything else inside the house hadn't changed and having read-up on the subject insisted they get a UK based BT engineer to reset by speed and 'suprise suprise' the very next day my speed went from just under 2Mbit to 4Mbit (the maximum my line will support as I am a long way away from my exchange which is a big factor BTW).

I now hover around 3 1/2 to 4Mbit depending on the time of day that I switch by router on.

I hope this info helps or at least gives you another avenue to look down.

Cheers,

Dizzy
