hi,ive never played a computer game but am going to look into it
i just looked under display settings and my laptop has an nvidia card,it says ive got 303mb of graphics memory 271mb shared and 32mb dedicated video memory,and turbocache is mentioned and the card is directx 10,
does anybody think i will be able to play newish games?
oh and 2gb of ram or does that not matter
any advice would be great thanx so much

I am not a games expert, but I will add my little bit.
Firstly, laptops are not that good for playing games. Mostly they have graphics cards suitable for "office" applications rather than gaming.
You say it says:

This means that the graphics card has 32Mb of memory built on to it, the rest of the graphics memory comes out of your 2Gb of RAM (so it is shared).
Most modern graphics cards need at least 256Mb of memory (and often graphics memory is faster than "normal" RAM) so I am not sure how yours will perform.
From the things you say (2gb of memory, directx 10) it sounds a new laptop, probably running Vista.
If you can give us the make / model of the laptop we may be able to get an idea if it is suitable for gaming.

hi guilbert,ye its an hp pavilion intel centrino core 2 duo tl5500@1.67 ghz vista home premium on hp site it seems like the graphics is listed as 128mb shared but on this laptop in the nvidia control panel under sys info it says total graphics memory 288 256 shared 32 dedicated=288 i presume the other 15 to take it to 303 is because its been used by me been on laptop at the moment someone did tell me this card is the new technology of graphics card whether it is ive no idea

In fact the amount of shared graphics memory can be changed, which may be why it says 128Mb on the web site as it is not a fixed number.
You could set the shared graphics memory to zero, so the only graphics memory available would be the 32mb on the graphics card (I suggest you DONT do this as Vista probably wont run).
Or you could set the shared graphics memory as 64Mb, 128Mb or 256Mb or probably any other number.

ok so youd sayy just leave everything as it is
its a new laptop so at the moment everything is as it came out of the box
on the box it says turbocache about the graphics as well as the mb,s of it etc however what turbocache stands for im not sure

I have had a look at the HP web site. Is your model the DV9340 ?
That model says it has "256 MB dedicated video memory"
Also it has a NVidia Ge Force Gp 7600 graphics card which seems pretty good without being outstanding, although they do mention it is good for gaming.

mine is the dv2278ea with 160gb hard drive the specs seem different depending where you look for same model notebook my card is the 7200 which on the nvidia site it says no dedicated memory and different amount of shared graphics yet this site here says 32mb dedicated which mine is but dosent mention the 271mb shared
although above site says direct x 9 and mine is directx 10 and above says 192 shared up 256 yet mine is 271 with support up to 303mb
seems strange all the differences

ive just downloaded first ever game ,trial version of rallisport challange just because it was one of the smaller size programmes from the games for windows site and it runs that no bother at al however i dont know how demanding this game is or whether this would give any indication of how good or not good the card is

I have an nVidia GeForce 7600 GS, DacType Integrated RAMDAC, 512 Mb RAM (Dedicated), running on an LG Flatron L1915S Monitor. My Card is of a fairly high end, but it still requires some useage of my system RAM to facilitate the real high spec games.
The NVIDIA Graphics card your using, is a lower spec, cut-down version specifically for Laptops. As Guilbert already mentioned, it is ideal for Office/General Applications, but it will perform fairly moderately of Gaming, but I wouldn't try pushing a real High End game onto it.
Good you've got a game working on your system, sounds like it can handle that game fairly easily.
Make a note of the Specs of the Game, & compare them to the Specs of your system, try to keep them at around the same range, or the game specs slightly lower, that shouldn't tax your system too much then.

snake lovely appreciate that i think ive got the option in nvidia control panel to lower quality for more performance or vice versa but at the moment i havent touched it all settings are as they were
ye plays that rallisport no bother
if i plug tv into laptop from tv out s video cable imm sure n vid panel says 2 monitors do i want cloned displays or 2 diff displays that dont mean ive got 2 cards does it
