Because they are part of the much smaller backs, or back division, and therefore they are required to be fleet of foot. The hooker has always been the smallest player in the forward pack. However in the modern player there is not much difference in size between the backs and forwards.

Re: Wazza's back!!!
If you want to really go to town on the Persian/Greek thing, do yourself a favour and get the book, 'The histories' by Herodatus. The narrative is a bit dry but worth the effort, every book written since basically uses Herodatus as a reference.
The book that I'm having a gander at the moment, is Jonathan Swift's 'Guilivars Travels', very good; it's making me realise that I must read more of the old stylee classics.
By the way Wozza, what did you do in 'Ol Amsterdam', did you see any mice there, going clip-clippety clop on the stair..?

The preface to Persian Fire makes particular reference to Herodotus, and praises him.
Holland presents his topics in a historical narrative, bringing the era to life. Rubicon helped flesh out the background of the HBO series Rome (which captured Cato and Cicero, for example, perfectly). But it also you to see the logical progression, and how the actions of one time echo down the years.
Brian Blessed said that he and the other actors in I, Claudius couldn't quite get a handle on their characters, until the adapter Jack Pullman told them, "It's the Mafia." That style of politics has existed throughout Italy's history, and bled into the politics of other nations too. Romeo And Juliet is a gang story---as West Side Story and Baz Lurhman's version showed. But it's always been gangs whether under the names Caesar and Pompey, Borgia and Medici, or political party titles.
