Because they are part of the much smaller backs, or back division, and therefore they are required to be fleet of foot. The hooker has always been the smallest player in the forward pack. However in the modern player there is not much difference in size between the backs and forwards.

If you want to really go to town on the Persian/Greek thing, do yourself a favour and get the book, 'The histories' by Herodatus. The narrative is a bit dry but worth the effort, every book written since basically uses Herodatus as a reference.
The book that I'm having a gander at the moment, is Jonathan Swift's 'Guilivars Travels', very good; it's making me realise that I must read more of the old stylee classics.
By the way Wozza, what did you do in 'Ol Amsterdam', did you see any mice there, going clip-clippety clop on the stair..?
