For most of the journey at least one of them was rocking back and to mumbling while reading from the book, 2-3 times during the journey they pull a massive feast or food out of a picnic thing and had their kids running up and down the train all hyper-active staring at people.

This has happened 3 different times that i have been on the train with them between manchester-london-manchester.

If i was mumbling the bible out loud, i'd be slated but they can mumble their book out loud and we are expected to accept it.

The kids on all 3 occasions, have run up and down the ailse of the train, and on 2 or the 3 been staring people as they go.

Also on 2 of the 3, the kids have been going into the toilets killing bowls/bottles/tubs full of water, and then 20 mins later going back to pour it down the toilet.

The worst part is, the first class cabin was EMPTY, the rest of the train was packed, so we paid the extra ?15 upgrade, and sat at the end of the train, and the familes all came an sat on the seat behind us, GRRRRRR

Practice whatever religion you like, but have some consideration!

It is said that both love and truth walk hand in hand. But if the need is great enough, can we learn to love a lie?

Harry who?

Perhaps I'm just not comfortable reading something written singularly for children, but the twenty or so pages I read of one of them a few years back did nothing for me. That said, I'll admit that now it's all over bar the films it will be interesting to see what JKR does next. A stab at adult fiction perhaps? Discounting all the jaw-dropping numbers, actual literary merit will always be desired by most serious writers, something many feel Potter lacks.

I've nothing against Potter btw, but one thing that does irk me a little is this 'she's got children reading again' piffle trotted out so often now. JKR has more than probably increased the figures, but kids have always been pretty good readers as any publisher or library will tell you. What she has done is bring to childrens fiction a level of attention which the medium long deserved anyway. So much thanks for that at least.

I'm still reeling that Keith didnt like Die Hard 4. I saw the first Harry Potter and fell into a deep stultifying coma of a sleep.

I just didnt get it. Where was the car chases? The fade to black and roll rap track outro. Then again I just didnt understand it being in a foreign language with subtitles as I have a hard time reading these things against a moving image. It hurts my eyes.

All said and done I know a lot of people seem to enjoy it. I dont mind this.

I thought Die Hard 4 was way better though.

Did anyone else notice the similarities with Star Wars?
Harry=Luke Skywalker, Hermione=Princess Leia, Dumbledore=Obiwankenobi, etc. These are particularly noticeable in the last book. Too much for my liking - I never liked Star Wars.

Generally, I enjoyed the books in all their imperfections, mostly because they are about the wonders of story-telling (which is often in short supply in adult fiction), and allowed to reader to step into a little world of its own, a world that is somehow a little bit easier to deal with than reality - in other words it delivers escapist yarn.
And yes, there are quite a few imperfections: too many loose ends (concerning both characters and magic), the background material is a little on the hyperactive side, and sometimes the writing fails to keep a grip on the reader.

Regarding the issue to what extent Rowling has brought children back into reading books, I would say the jury is still out there. However, one thing she has undoubtedly achieved: publishers take children's literature now seriously.

Harry Potter dies when some street thug from a rival school near a council estate comes in to tax him of his lunch money. Harry Potter pulls out his silly little wand to turn the thug into a frog but the thug wearing a Kangol t-shirt, gold chains and gold tooth laughs his head off and turns serious and says: Shut the fuck up muthafucka! and shoots Harry in the chest twice then jumps into his Renault Turbo convertible with the fluffy dice and flag of Jamaica and speeds off.

Hope I didnt spoil the ending for anyone.

I liked Star wars way better because it had space ships, bright lights, and fuzzy buzzy sound effects and the big hairy dog man creature and the bloke in the black metal outfit with the respiratory problem. When I grow up I wanna be like Han Solo.

Well given my profession I cater to a lot of Han Solos so I guess I'm half way there.
