I think Deer Hunter it did quite well at the box office and won 5 Oscars which is why they gave the Director Michael Cimino a blank cheque to make the underatted Heaven's Gate which managed to bankrupt an entire film studio.

I can't believe I forgot The Deer Hunter, that is probably my fave Vietnam film even if I couldnt remember to mention it in the first place :(

Yeah, Deer Hunter beats the arse off Platoon. I like Platoon although for me personally it has lost some of its power since I first saw it whereas Deer Hunter still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. I love Full Metal Jacket (even the second half) but feel the message of the film "young men being forced to become dehumanised killing machines" was already adressed to a better extent in Kubricks earlier film "Paths Of Glory".

Dace of course it was disappointing. The point of the movie is how these guys wanted to do something with their lives and why they ended up doing what htey did. I would say it was more of a heist movie using the vietnam experience to back up why he did what he did and yeah it was a sad waste of a life which is waht I think the movie was all about.

Kind of ironic that Martin Sheen was the judge saying:

"Dont talk to me about the war son. I've served in the biggest war..." Since he was in Apocalypse Now.

Mind you the film didnt do that well commercially so I guess a lot of people didnt get it but its one of those little gems I love

Platoon is an excellent film, the final battle scene is one of the best I have ever seen. However, few films are a match for Apocalypse Now, I've seen it so often I virtually know it off by heart, I only wish I could watch it again for the first time

Well it did garner 5 Oscars, Picture, Director, Sound, Edit, and Walken for best supporting actor, though Vilmos Zsigmond who should have got best cinematography came away empty handed.
So when the boy wonderkid, Cimino, came up with his next film, how could it fail? Green light to 'Heaven's Gate' and the rest as they say was bankruptcy for UA.
