They used to be quite good but read this and find out exactly how good

Friday night was fish night at our place: fish and chips from the local Milk Bar. The chalk sign promised you all the bounty of the sea - Hake, Snapper, Flathead, Tailor, and even Barramundi. In my parents' naivety, they never questioned the fact the store was 40km inland, and that the Greek owners were about as likely to keep four or five varieties of fish in stock as they were to use real scallops (it was another 10 years, and a chippie in Portland, Victoria, before I was to experience the strange sensation of a real - read NOT potato - scallop). So each week, we'd try a different, succulent fish - and each week, get the same shark and chips that everyone else did.

But what made Fridays really exciting was the way us kids used to react to the weekly catch. Perhaps it was the oil that probably hadn't been changed since the last Health Department Inspection in 1964. More likely it was the fillets that, having not been sold on Thursday, likely ended up on the top of the pile on Friday night. Or was it those quaint hygiene standards of the 1970s, and the lack of hair nets and gloves on the four middle aged gents who ran the place? Either way, once every three months or so, about five hours after dinner, my head would be inside a bucket, like Darth Vader in his helmet, my stomach muscles heaving and contracting to expel all that which illed me. And the over-riding smell was that cheap, plastic smell, as my nose rested against the bucket between retches. The smell that came back to haunt me 30 years later.

Even rose coloured glasses can't make that smell go away....lol

i used to work in a blackpudding shed in waterfoot, rossendale. and i agree , fish and chips can be a soggy gag of cr-p. anyway after 3 heart attacks , and a tripple bypass i can honestly say hand on heart thats an healthy option to fish.

We have 2 good 'uns near me, 'Nick the Greek's' and the Indian Fish Bar.
Nicks is Mrs Ace's favourite, but the YTS lads are too slow to wrap them and give you the change in 2ps and 5ps.
Indian Fish Bar is my favourite, great chunky chips and his 'curry sauce' is akin to a vindaloo........brilliant.
His shop is spotless, and his wife is a bit tasty as well.
There's another not too far, but chavs hang around it as it has a fruit machine and the skanky servers look like truck drivers in drag.

The West London of my youth is now on dvd

I've met the man on the street............and he's a cunt
