It's interesting to read all your views I think this sums it up best:

I rarely watch the news in LA, all it consists of is storys about people being shot, stabbed, rapped and burned alive in their homes!
If I watched the news over here I would probably be to afraid to go outside, hence I don't bother.
I am very proud to be British.
I think I will refine from reading to much into BBC news in the future!

No I haven't read the book but I don't know if I would by that part about legalized abortion though because from what I understand black women weren't aborting their babies like the people at Planned Parenthood would've wanted them to because typically black women kept their babies and I do believe that in the mid to late 1990s teen pregnancies were down quite a bit. I know about the crack epidemic just from what I saw going on in the neighborhoods I frequented and I remember when it hit Chicago hard at that. I remember hearing rapper Ms. MC Lyte say in one of her songs in 1988 "$5 crackhead" and I said to myself "prostitutes are that cheap now? This was New York she was talking about but little did I know that was also Chicago. After Mayor Harold Washington died in office in 1987 and after gang leader Jeff Ford went to jail in 1986 the crack epidemic hit us hard buddy.

Then again layla, I bet you live in the valley in L.A. I think you'd have a different perspective on violence and things if you lived in, lets say: South Watts or Compton with Snoop and all his homies.
I bet the residents of those area's would leave in a flash if they were offered somewhere else to live.
Speaking of violent places, I used to live in Johannesburg, now that was f*****g dangerous!

Its not you Lyla its our shitty stinking country. Jim and I age getting out AGAIN and going to live in Budapest. There you can walk around at night, get a tram or the metro and not get stabbed or shot at. I know its a miracle. They obviously do have crime in Hungary but there is a very visible police presence on the streets, unlike here. My 2 best mates are police officers in Wandsworth and they think being a police officer is very hard work for little pay, with the extra worry someone will pull a gun, knife or even try and run you over! Half the time they are doing paperwork and when they do go out, there aren't enough police officers to deal with all the crimes.

Bizzare, Most people seem to think a lot of crime is commited by Eastern Europeans in this country, and your going to live there! crime is crime in any country, nowhere is immune really..
