The word 'cunt' obviously didn't have the same public offensive meaning in those days - a refreshing honest approach I suppose.

I'm not sure why it became taboo, but apparently it was sufficiently so in
Elizabethan England for Shakespeare to feel able to refer to it only in a
roundabout fashion.
