Film DVDs-Rent or Buy?

You've just seen a film thats hit you for six and have the obvious compulsion to own the DVD as soon as its available,question is how long do you wait before you buy the DVD or is renting the best option knowing that great films almost universally come out with Anniversary releases(10th,25th etc)
Directors Cuts with unseen footage etc eventually

When you can pick up the green mile,last of the mohicans & shawshank redemption for AUS$25-00 in the old technology for less than the cost of 1 of these in HD format it seems a no brainer but then I don't own a HD tv so?

being somewhat poorer nowadays than I have been in previous years I would say rent it unless its a real "must-have" with loads of extras like directors cut and commentry etc etc

The problem with renting is that if it does knock you out you realise you could've put the couple of quid towards buying it and thus not have to hand it back. Grrr...

But this happens rarely these days. I buy all the time and renting is usually just for the mainstream releases I've missed and would still like to see, which isn't that frequent now.

Not that buying is all smiles and flowers though. I recall breezing unawares into HMV for the CH4 Beckett on Film box set I most certainly wanted. How much?
