I agree that somewhere somebody needs to make a stand about the pressure the ref is put under but like you say it is very unlikely to happen.

One thing I did forget to say is that I do realise the refs have a difficult job to do. Particularly when they are put under the kind of pressure that Chelsea put them under and I don't expect the refs to get every decision right all of the time.

They are human and make mistakes like everybody else. But what I am looking for is a ref to get 90-95% of the decisions right but importantly get the big decisions right.

Yesterday the ref got a hell of a lot wrong but particularly the big one wrong. Unbelievably wrong.

That's what my problem with the ref is/was yesterday.

I could moan about the Chelsea players antics all day so I'll save you the grief.

And what about the "extra" 2 points you got at Villa thanks to a goal from a free kick that should never have been given. Are you willing to give those back?

Over 38 games bad decisions tend to even themselves out.

Yes the ref was incompetent yesterday and Liverpool should have won, but the ref was equally incompetent last weekend when you should have only drawn!

No doubt over the coming weeks and months other refs will make howlers in other games... there may come a time when Chelsea lose or draw a game they deserved to draw or win, but I'll look back on yesterday and think "swings and roundabouts"

They do, about 90% of the time.
It's the nature of the beast that when they do make a bish it's in the full
glare of publicity and of course it's possible that their error may even
affect the result. Not a job for the faint-hearted......

Its time those old farts at FIFA etc allowed video replays..eg like tennis they could appeal a maximum of one decision a game.It would lead to a fairer final table. If Liverpool lose the league by one point because of that decision it will leave a bad taste.I know refs cant always get it right but the FA etc should see video replays as a way of supporting refs and not as something harmful..it will happen one day and decisions like this just hasten the day........

I think they'll decide after seeing how Hawk-Eye performs......

You mean the one where Gerrard hurdled the tackle and still tried to score with his shot even though he was off balance?

Yeah that's the one hey.

May or may not have been a penalty but it was clearly no dive either as many Chelsea fans seem to be hinting on the football message boards.

That's the age old saying in football that things even themselves up but are there any the facts to support this is the case or is this just one of football's old wives tales?

You are correct in that Styles went the other way after the penalty and gave any 50/50 decision Liverpool's way but seeing as he spent the first 60 minutes giving any 50/50 decision Chelsea's way then that hardly evens itself up.

I also don't think that in that last 30 mins that 3 or 4 free kicks 40-50 yards from goal is equivilant to a penalty from 12 yards out so can't see how that evens itself up either.

If you gave any manager the choice of 3-4 free kicks 40-50 yards from goal or a penalty then we all know which they'd take.

As for the Gerrard/Villa game then that probably wasn't a foul but having to smack in a free kick from 25 yards up and over a wall is a little different to shooting from 12 yards out with no wall.

I was mad as hell yesterday about it and it still rankles with me today but it's happened now and can't be changed so I just hope things "do" even themselves up in other games.

It's also time for me and other Liverpool fans to stop vilifying the ref. He made a major, major mistake but he's a football ref who made a big cock up and he's not a criminal.

It's happened now and gone and it's time to move on.

there is a big difference in being given a debatable freekick 30 yards out and having a penalty given against you that never was.

Yes, a penalty can be missed and a free kick scored!! Or vice-versa. !wink!

The fact remains that Liverpool scored from a free kick that should never have been given against Villa. Liverpool got 3 pts when they should only have got one.

I'm still waiting to hear a Liverpool fan be honest and admit that, against Villa, the dodgy decisions went their way and they got more from the game than they deserved... but I imagine I shall have a long wait!

I wasn't saying he dived, I was more or less pointing out it was another penalty decision Rob Styles got wrong - that time 'for' Liverpool.

As Bob pointed out, those 2 points you dropped yesterday make up for the 2 points you gained against Villa. Don't feel too aggrieved.
