Most people don't want 'serious' on Fri nights.

I've known a couple of people who fit the growing up conditions you describe, but have turned out fine. Having no kids myself and having very little contact with them makes me amply qualified to be a child raising expert and I would say that pushy parents are the bigger problem.

Kids these days seem to be pushed more and more to perform and achieve without being allowed time to muck around and just be kids.
