Soon to be 11 year old niece..... She likes to read -fortunately- but only those Jacqueline Wilson stories.
I was thinking of getting a few classics like Gulliver's Travels & Robinson Crusoe......but RC is pretty much of a slow starter, so unsure on that one.
Any ideas as I've not been much of a fictional reader (though I'm trying to change my ignorance)?

How about Black Beauty. It's an engaging tale, and a lot of young girls go ga-ga for horses.

As someone who has just done the same.
Can I suggest book tokens and taking her to the store.

Cheers guys, they're on my list of possibilities.
As for book tokens: She'll buy more Jacqueline Wilson stories and I want to encourage her to read a few classics. I don't want to have to force her in a headlock in Waterstones because she won't listen to reason! !laugh!
I may get her a few classics what I feel will give her some appreciation of literature from the 'olden days', as she'd probably say, as well has a book token so that she can get something which is her choice. A decent compromise.

There's a lot to be said for letting a child read whatever they like as long as they are reading and enjoying it. More often than not they move on eventually to what their elders want them to read.

There's no enforcement going on. I buy the books, and it's upto my neice whether she reads them or not.

Oh dear,
I start a thread about getting my niece a few books for her birthday and within 7 posts I'm being compared to a raping murderer.
This vendetta against me is so unjust...........and yet, adversity will strengthen me.
