Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are both time bombs. Iran seems to me less of a threat, in the immediate. Those are the states we need to focus on.

Al Qaeda is just a distraction and presents a miinmal danger to the West in real terms. Yes, there will be further attempts but will there be weekly bombing campaigns? No. Does Al Qaeda have any real military capability? No. Will Western intelligence and infiltration improve? Yes. Is the West more vigilant? Yes.

911 was a spectacular guerilla success and a truly iconic event in terms of propaganda, but a couple of buildings and a couple of thousand people, in the scale of things, is not significant. Still, an innocent American civilian life lost is worth at least 50,000 Iraqi ones. 911 only happened due to errors of judgement by the Bush administration. It could have been prevented, as is now patently clear, The hysteria, particularly in the US, that surrounds 'the war on terror' would be laughable if it weren't changing the world in so adverse a way.

There is no link between Al Qaeda and Iraq, never has been, and yet so many Americans appear to be confused on this issue. Typically Bush tries to connect them but the only link now is that the shitstorm he created in Iraq is fertile ground for every anti-Western Islamic group in the region.

If Bush put as much effort into brokering a peace accord in Palestine, as he does into trying to justify his catastrophic foreign policy, he might lessen some of the hate-fuel in the Islamic world. If he accepted that the only viable solution to Iraq left now is to partition it, he might salvage some kind of positive legacy in the region. If he used Turkey more as an ambassador to Islam he might find more ears willing to listen. If he recognised that force is the last resort, not the first response, he might not have dug himself into such an insane geo-political position.

Was watching BBC News 24 at the weekend and they see Pakistan as the most dangerous place on Earth. Musshy Peas could be toppled by Islamists et voila, radical Muslims with proven nukes and delivery systems.
