Albums vs Singles/Greatist Hits

Post by Deuce Bigolo »

Does anyone buy the album anymore or is it singles followed by the obligatory greatist hits to come out when the artist changes record labels?

Personally I favour buying the album

Plenty of gems never get aired anywhere else

Just my 2 cents worth

Albums here too.

Sometimes I'll get the odd single but very rarely.

Just recently bought Blonde On Blonde and a couple of Scott Walker albums, and am planning a few more purchases.

Music is the food of love.

Quite often, I'll buy an album for one track I've heard, and within a few listens that will seem like only the fifth or sixth best on the album.

I've always thought of singles as nothing more than a taster of the album

Unless its an artist from the '1 hit wonder stable' then a closer look would surely be worthwhile?

The difference between say a greatist hits of an established artist and one of their individual albums is like night & day

Nothing grates more than when material from different periods of an artist/band is mixed together

The critics think so

Albums are obviously better as it results in the artists vision & is a whole! Except for in the case of girl/boy bands & manufactured artists, the Album is mainly there to help promote the singles & full of duff filler material!

There really is no point in buying singles now as they are usually on the album! Plus a lot of artists don't even put on New B-Sides & just put an album track as the B-Side or a demo or acoustic version of an Album track! Whereas before, artists used to release stand alone singles, that didn't appear on the albums. Or if it was an Album song as a single. Good quality B-side or B-sides on the 12" version!

So definitely Albums for me! Though Greatest Hits are a good way to introduce you to an unfamiliar artist!

Yeah, B On B is Dylan. I'm working my way up to The Drift. Tilt is very good, so I have my hopes . . .
