A terrible loss, Punch was unmissable when he was editor, A man whose writing would make you laugh out loud, A rare gift.

To be honest, I thought he was older. He was editor of Punch when I was in my teens, but its satirical teeth had been stolen by Private Eye long since, and it seemed puffed up with its own wittiness. Coren was funny, though, and did a fair amount of telly panel shows (the lunchtime version of Call My Bluff foremost among them).

Was a regular on R4s 'The News Quiz'. There's a special programme about him next Friday at 6:30 pm on R4.
