There is a 'religion' (it should be classified as a cult) that has hit the headlines just now.
A fair few years ago I had the misfortune of becoming involved in this 'religion'. Thank fuck I quickly saw the light and hightailed it out of there.
The day I left, I phoned some of the few mates that still had time for me. We agreed to meet in what used to be my local. Duly appointed hour of meet arrived and in I went. It was good to be back home. My favourite stool was still propped against the bar and the jukebox still had all the 7 inch singles from 20 years back.
But hark, what else did I see? Nothing less than 2 of the elders from the 'church'. The 2 elders that brainwashed me into believing alcohol was evil and I should never touch another drop. The 2 elders that preached about good, moral standards that the bible taught us that should be adhered to. The 2 elders that promoted themselves as fine, upstanding pillars of the community with loving wives and cherubs for children. Who else was with these 2 elders? Two 15 year old girls that were daughters of members of these fine, upstanding elders 'church'. The girls were half pissed and the elders were pawing them like salivating dogs.
I walked over to the party and said hello. The elders took one look at me, shit a brick and fucked off. Well, what else would fine, upstanding pillars of the community do?
A few days later I was paid a visit from them. They tried, in vain, to explain their actions, I just told them to fuck off.
Please, even if you are at your lowest, never, never, never join this cult. I was lucky, I got out. Some people pay the ultimate price because assholes like those elders tell them what they can and cannot do.

James Won't.
I think.
A friend of mine was a particularly sad case, familiar with Latin and Greek and also with scripture in those languages. A couple of young missionary trainees showed up at his door one day, and he allowed them in and started debating with them about what the biblical text originally was, rather than it appears in English.
They were well impressed and got him to agree to let them return with their mentor in the church. On the return, the mentor/tutor/elder arrives with the young women and starts with the tenets of his church. "Oh," says my friend, "that's a mistranslation from the Greek and ---" "Come on, we're leaving," the guy told his disappointed acolytes, who'd wanted to see him argue the case. "We're wasting our time here."
The moral of this tale? Very few sects/cults welcome open minds able to reason for themselves.

You do realise, don't you, that religious leaders seldom adhere to, or even believe in, the nonsense that they preach?
No Pope has ever actually believed that Christ was the son of God, or that there even is a God.
Likewise, only very rarely will a big-time drug dealer be a user of the merchandise that he peddles.

All religions are cults, its just some are deemed more acceptable than others.
