Not up to you to decide what people want to call themselves.
I agree. I never said otherwise........did I?
I don't believe you are sorry at all, just mildly resentful that some people seem to want to have the right to choose how to be described by others.
A bit of both. I'm sorry at being slightly resentful, and resentful that I feel slightly sorry. (why should I be made to feel ignorant for saying a word that perfectly acceptable yesterday?) Like I said, if a term is clearly wrong -retard/spaz- then I can see it's impolite to use those terms. But to say the word 'handicapped' holds them back, where as 'disabled' doesn't, seems baffling.

Everyone grows up with tags, and described with terminologies that we did not agree on, but we seem to get by without make others look offensive, or feel guilty. Disabled people call people without disabilities 'able-bodied'. No one asked me if I wanted to be referred to as able-bodied. 'I' want to be referred to as 'handsome' because 'able-bodied' ignores my obvious chiselled jaw, and gorgeous cheekbones.

I have a disabled friend -who will sadly die of their disability within the next 2 years- and I always refer to her as 'disabled'. Not because she asked me to, but it was the term I was brought up to use. The article mentions that even 'disabled people' isn't quite right, and that the term 'people who are disabled' may be better as it puts the noun 'people' first. People have every right to decide what they want to be called, but I have the right to say they're making those who do not conform look like ignorant, unfeeling twats, unnecessarily.

Lets get something straight here Wazza (can I call you Wazza?), and that is that the transition from 'handicapped' to 'disabled' almost definitely wasn't voted on by the then named 'handicapped', but probably a gang of social workers who told/assured them 'disabled' was better.

Basically, making someone feel an insensitive twat because they failed to use the latest, fashionable terminology, is just as bad as deliberately using some derogatory terminology to make the a person feel bad. In both cases you're making someone feel bad about themselves unnecessarily.

There's nothing that makes someone feel more superior, than making another feel inferior, whether it's through hurtful, derogatory remarks, or condemnation and guilt.

To be honest, we are all handicapped in various degrees.

Maybe we do not need terminology for certain disabilities at all.

I see this vote is already handicapped by the bottom 3 list

Not altogether unexpected I bet

My vote

The best are the ones you reply to

The worst are the ones you don't even click on

Just as in real life they'll be different for all of us

What next,hall of fame/infamy?

I think if we could have an anonymous vote for both top and bottom forumites it would save a lot of shite. I for one would have voted for someone who has already posted in this thread as my number one because they are interesting to read, sensible, informative and helpfull whereas my bottom one would be also someone who has posted in here because they are a troll [even if they don't think they are], start stupid topics that has led me to stop posting in or even looking in off-topic because it got taken over by his/her shite and well anymore would just end up in a bitter tirade!
