They had a few faults, mass murder being one of them, but those S.S. chivers outfits did seem a little too tight.

In the immortal words of Mel Brooks, "Don't be a fool, be a smarty, come on and join the Nazi party"!

"Don't be stupid, be a smarty
Come and join the Nazi Party."

It follows:

"I am come from Dusseldorf
And that is why they call me Rolf."

Ah, The Producers (the original, that is). It's patchy, to be sure, but contains at least three "possible die laughing" moments.

Springtime for Hitler always gets me, no matter how many times I've seen it.
You always think when watching it, "How the f**k did he get away with that?"

Brooks got away with it because he's Jewish. A gentile trying the same thing would have been accused of crass insensitivity---even assuming they had the balls to try. Brooks seems to subscribe to the view that laughing at monsters takes away some of their power (see also The Inquisition number in History Of The World, not to mention Hitler on ice and Jews In Space).

I believe the SS uniforms were designed by Hugo Boss. They don't tend to mention that in the ads nowadays do they?

You want to get the Special Edition DVD version of the 1968 film.

On the extras there's a bit where Mel Brooks and Kenneth Mars (who played Franz Liebkind) recount a scene where Franz is tending to his pigeons.

Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) has gone to see Franz him to try and persuade him to let him produce "Springtime for Hitler" on the stage. Franz is tending to his pigeons wearing an old German storm troopers helmet splattered with pigeon shit.

Kenneth Mars is a method actor and gets into an argument with Mel Brooks about how many spots of pigeon shit there should be on the helmet. Mel says nine spots, Ken says five. They finally settle on seven. It's hilarious.

Franz Liebkind:

?Hitler... there was a painter! He could paint an entire apartment in ONE afternoon! TWO coats!?

There?s also an extra with Lee Meredith - who played Ulla - Max's Swedish secretary. She re-enacts her table dance. She must be knocking sixty now but she's still hot.

Ulla:

[Sees Max and Leo and takes off dress] ?We make love??

Max Bialystock:

?No, we don't make love. Go to work.?
[Ulla starts dancing to music on record player]

Roger De Bris:

?What have you done, L.S.D.??

Lorenzo St. DuBois:

?About six months... but I'm on probation, so it's all good, baby!?

Roger De Bris:

?No, I mean, what do you do best??

Lorenzo St. DuBois:

?I can't do that here. That's why they put me away, baby!?

Best DVD extras ever I think.
