My comment about Neville is mainly directed to his lack of prescence in the box on corners. Can recall aussie popovic making him look like a pigmy in that laughable 3-1 friendly joke of a game a while ago
Wes Brown has had long enough to be a jack of all trades in defence
All comes back to the Managers tactis as to who he uses
I wonder if Mc laren like Keegan before him actually has any other then plan A...get the ball to owen & rooney and score
Lessons still need to be learned

Roberto Carlos, Ashley Cole, Danny Alves are all fullbacks that aren't brilliant in the air either, but top fullbacks all the same.
Like you said, it was McLarens team that played, and has been for 15 months. There's no doubting that England have suffered with injuries this year, but McLaren is a decent coach, but average manager. Even with a good manager, England haven't got the players in every position to win anything, but we SHOULD have qualified.
McLaren just isn't good enough (and not many other English managers are either).

Wes has had a few dodgy games, but I still don't know why he isn't picked for England. He at leaqst puts heart and soul into the game, even when he's crap.
No doubt there will be some who will say this is the chicken coming home to roost of having so many non-English players playing in the Premier League. Couple of weeks ago, Arsenal fielded 11 foreign players with six others and young Mr Walcott on the bench.
There are some good journeyman players that could, and would, play their hearts out for their country given the chance. A shame the Frank Lampards of this world don't give the same effort.

Did you see Frank touch the ball in the first half? Once or twice I think. He improved a little after the penalty but not much.
Oh well, I feel sorry for Rooney again. Played in 2 tournaments and was hampered by injury both times. The third tournament and he'll be watching on telly. Not good.

True Sam but then those teams those guys play in wouldn't mark a 6 foot 6 centreback with a 5 foot 11 fullback at a corner
Like i said their defence leaves a lot to be desired
I agree they should have qualified
Even Croatia(world cup 2006 group stage)shouldn't have been a threat
Compared to the team of 1998 the are very average
Russia is still rebuilding and aiming for World Cup 2010
even Hiddink would admit that I think
Macedonia & Israel are pesky but shouldn't bother a quality team
especially at HOME
Unfortunately looking at the results they very rarely brought their A-Grade game
Far too much reliance on the 2 wonder boys up front to paper over the team cracks with individual brilliance
Injuries & lack of consistently brilliant form finally put paid to them
