Wanky students..

Post by Lizard »

From BBC website.

"Oxford debate delayed by protest"

Students say the views of the controversial speakers are not valid
A debate at the Oxford Union was delayed when protesters forced their way into a university building.
BNP leader Nick Griffin and controversial historian David Irving were invited to talk about free speech.

So, they dont like it up em, does the Oxford union believe in free speech or not?
Should these two have been allowed to speak, or stoned to death?
I,m not fence sitting, I dont know what happened, did they speak? I hope so personaly.

"Students say the views of the controversial speakers are not valid"

Which is just what the fascist dictators of their wet dreams would say about their fellow citizens views. These students are not just wanky, Liz. There are a set of pretentious, over privileged, monumentally na?ve, middleclass twats. T' fuck wiv 'em, I say!

The frightening thing is that these cunts will be running the country one day. Now, a lot of them will get over this pretentious, beret wearing, student bollocks, and become sensible executive directors of large corporations. But some of them won?t - so imagine in 15 years time when they are running the show and they are decreeing (making laws) that any views which run counter to their's are invalid!

But what I reckon happened here is that they thought - 'Hey, this is a great excuse to have a ruck and relieve the monotony of studying. We can also feel seriously smug and self satisfied that we are occupying the moral high ground'. But they are only occupying the high ground in their own self-satisfied minds. ?Freedom of speech? means freedom of speech or it means nothing. The freedom to only say things that chime with the prevailing view is no freedom at all. Bedsides, if Griffin and Irving are wrong, then there is nothing to fear, is there? If they are wrong their views and philosophies will crumble to dust as they are exposed to the light of fact, reason, and argument. To evade the argument only serves to give it credence.

A rather silly comment but then their students

True freedom of speech comes from getting those with extreme views to share their thoughts so they may be shown the error of their ways

Attack the arguments not the messenger

Like the UNI debate that went on at that yankee uni with the iranian leader recently.Hung drawn & quartered before he even opened his mouth

When he finally started talking he made a laughing stock of himself anyway
so there was no need to attack him as an individual

Iran has no homosexuals in a population of 70 million
Like,how would he know?

The head of the Oxford Union claimed Irving made a tit of himself, which doesn't surprise me. The trouble is, the BNP is claiming this platform as a way of putting across its sensible, reasoned and not in any way bigoted agenda. Griffin knows what he's doing, whether you, me and everyone else likes it or not, whereas Irving is a publicity-seeking muppet.

If you stifle free speech then it just goes underground

With the internet being unpoliceable its not a pretty picture

Some will always hold extreme views no matter what is said/unsaid

I've said it before if you take everyone along for the ride including those that are trying to fall through the cracks then parties like the BNP(who live and breed on fear)will never prosper

One nation in OZ has all but been put to the sword after letting it run its course and not mussling its policies

Always amusing to hear students claiming that "The Government is trying to shut us up because they're scared of our radical ideas man." Two minutes later they are yelling through their megaphones and banging their tin drums to drown out someone else's free speech.

They will deny any hypocrisy in this, because they KNOW that their views are correct. So broadminded of them, and after all isn't that one of the benefits of higher education?

But the internet is policeable and increasingly so in not just the usual oppresive regimes like China, Saudi Arabia, Burma, Iran, Cuba, (often assisted by the big players such as Yahoo and Google) but also in countries like our own. Obvious cases are child porn, threats of libel forcing sites to remove material, the security services observing militant Islamic sites, and just round the corner the threat of 3 years inside and your own entry on the sex offenders register for possessing so-called 'extreme' porn got from the internet. Just because there are clever people who can sometimes sidestep the authourities by using various subterfuges, allowing information out of Burma on the one side and permitting paedophile rings to operate on the other, doesn't mean it isn't policed and that we are all under surveillence to some degree whilst on the web. All governments whatever their make up, dont like the internet and want to control our use of it. Generally this means they want us to use it to buy things and be advertising fodder, but not to dig into their wrong doings etc. If HM government can restrict our access to porn because they dont like it, how can they morally attack the Chinese for preventing pro-democracy protesters from using the internet? The Chinese would say they are just protecting society from itself, just as our lot do.
