Oddly, this is quite heartening.

I thought student politics were having a long slow death, with the scruffy, duffel-coated student demonstrator of the past replaced by the blank-faced careerist far more interested in their ipod and haircut than anything else. Still entirely middle class of course.

Must brush up on my stereotypes.

Nothing wrong with stereotypes. In the absence of any other data they give us a pretty good idea of what a person or group of people are about. Of course one needs to be aware that not everyone will fall into the stereotypical view of a person or group.

Middleclass? Absolutely. Even if a person started out in life as a humble prole, the minute he or she starts wringing their hands over issues that are currently fashionable with the liberal left middle classes, then they cross the line and become middleclass themselves. Nowadays being middleclass is not about money or property, it is about culture and values.

You?re right about the blank faced, image conscious careerists, though. One immediately thinks of knobs like the two ?Ed?s (Balls and Milliband).

Actually if you think it through..... its perfectly correct as a "studenty thing to do..."

Students, especially in the more "ari-fairy/select" uni's have always been more vocal about non-conforming than about serious study... which is vocalised as they want to be "right on man..." hip and trendy and bucking society.

So if society is closed.. its vocal about an open society. If society is strictly conservative its about being comunist... if society is largly open it is only correct that the overly rich and spoilt kids (Ie the ones that don't need to learn cos they'll get matta and patta's business when the oldies die) will figure out that open and free speach is wrong and voice it.

The rest of the students however think they are a bunch of cunts and just want to learn everything and anything about everything they can....

Sadly where its all going to hell in a handbasket is the spoilt kids will probably end up in the covernment using mater and pater's clout.
