Payback was an enormously troubled shoot with the theatrical version ripped apart by studio meddling. Director Brian Helgeland recently put the film back together as intended (Payback - Straight Up) and is supposed to be almost completely different and much, much better. One to keep an eye out for.

As violent films rely on violence for their emotional response the violence is sanitised in order to make it acceptable. The audience hears he pop of a silenced gun and the victim is dead silently and presumably without pain.
