I think it was down to two reasons.

One was that folk and folk rock was rather big at that time: Eagles, Fairport Convention, Byrds, Sandy Denny, Jackson Browne, Dylan of course and many others.

Compared to today it had quite a mainstream following and I think Nick's music just got lost in the huge folk and folk rock output of the day.

Second was that he was very shy and would not do many (or any) live concerts to back up his albums. If he did do a live concert he would shuffle on stage, mumble a few announcements, quietly sing his songs, and shufle off.

This made the albums difficult for the record companies to promote.

Funnily enough parts of his songs often appear as backing music to various TV programs.

My wife was watching a gardening program a few weeks ago, and all of a sudden some acoustic guitar music was played, and I shouted "hey that's Nick Drake".

Some consolation for his family that he is still remembered today.

He is buried near where I live, Tanworth In Arden in Warwickshire.

You can listen to short segments of his songs on Amazon.

With a quiet haunting voice they are ideal late night listening when you are in a melancholy mood.

His first album Five Leaves Left. Listen to River Man

His second album Bryter Layter (brighter later). Listen to Northern Sky

His third album Pink Moon. Listen to Place to be.

This was his last official album (although demos and other tracks have been released on albums since).

After Pink Moon he died. It may have been suicide or an accidental overdose as he was depressed and taking prescription drugs at the time.

Astonishing the amount of people who turn up at Tamworth to visit his grave.

For those that dont know.

There is a TAMWORTH (with an "M") in north east Birmingham (near Lichfield)

There is a TANWORTH (with an "N") (small village) just south east of Birmingham.

I should have read the message under the "Listen Again" button - it's no longer available.

Here are a couple more links that you might find useful.

In fact, olay, in your world normal plain ol' illness free folk seem to be a rarer class than any with mentalist conditions which you describe.
