Re: Petrol Protest - will you ?
"He presumbaly means you tend to repeat the same few viewpoints over and over again,"
But don't we all? Are you suggesting that consistency is a negative quality? Are you suggesting that I should vary my viewpoints on a daily basis? So, for instance, on Monday I should say that Gordon Brown is crap, then, just for a change, on Tuesday I should say that he is the best thing since sliced bread? And then, to add a little more variety, maybe I could be undecided on Wednesday? But what would that do to my (or anyone's) credibility? My views are not whimsy or shifting sands, they have been arrived at through careful observation and consideration of the human condition over a number of years. That I tend to regularly restate them is just my way of letting off steam - a safety valve, if you will. I?m also grateful for the existence of this forum and the opportunity to do so. I don?t feel that expecting another forumite to engage with these arguments is ever futile ? they are, for the most part, important issues of the day that almost always draw some kind of response - thus allowing me to feel vindicated on that score.
There are many more issues I would like to raise, to do with art and science, but I just don?t have the time. I could (happily) spend the whole week raising issues and arguing the toss, but since I?m not independently minted I frequently have to clear my mind and focus on earning a crust. This means that when I do get a minute I need to make the most economical use of that time, and consequently, I tend to focus on the subjects that are nearest the surface of my consciousness ? the ones that are really winding me up.
But is it such a chore reading my ?column?? Some froumites genuinely look forward to it. Surely, whatever the subject, it has to be better than much of the banal, incoherent, drivel that seems to be the staple ingredient of many bgafd posts?
Regarding the length of time we take over our replies: I wasn?t aware there were any set rules? I wasn?t aware this was ?a quick draw forum?? I just thought is was a forum. Some posters (like Mike, the ?Erotic Artist?) take a week or more over their replies. I?ve never had any issues over that. I?m always happy to take up where we left off. It all depends on the individual and the issue being discussed. Since I mainly stick to serious issues, I like to give a serious response, and for me at least, this will inevitably involve a measure of chin stroking. If that then means me losing valuable ?thinking on your feet points?, then I?m happy to concede them. After all it?s not a matter of life and death, is it?
