Anyone else here writing a book?

Post by Trumpton »

With the literary expertise of MF evident and now hj222 joining him as our newest scribe, I'm wondering if anyone else is putting quill to parchment to reel off their ideas and to inform a breathless public of their thoughts and ideas?

Btw, I'm not writing a book and have no intention of doing such.

I might do at some point, a few folk have suggestd it. A huge project.

You could compile a user-friendly compendium for the modern-day sweet-tooth, "Bounty be surprised: Sweets of the past are best". I'm sure you'd have a snappier, punchier title than that pish attempt.

A hot seller in prospect.

Mentioning sweets - again LOL - I had one of those giant sized peanut Kit-Kat's the other day. I must say it was quite nice. Also, one of those Kinder chocolate Tubes - again quite nice.

You did mention the Kit-Kat the other day there, glad you liked it despite the fact it sounds vile.

I'm dubious of your sweetie-posts now, as I think you may be tying to encourage a fudgey-nostalgia-gush to take the thread on a detour!! !wink!

I'm on the chupa-chups these days, a product that has improved with the years; lovely flavours to melt in your mouth for a half-hour or so. mmmmmmmmm

!wink!

In Poundland you can by a 400g of Toblerone for 1 quid. That's half the price elsewhere. Went there today (Poundland) but they'd all gone and no replacements until the weekend !sad!

I like chocolate that has nuts in them - preferably hazelnuts, yumyum.

Book writing requires a deal of discipline (you have to write for a set amount of time each day, not just when you feel like it), so that rules me out. It also needs a clear vision of what you are writing about and want to say.

Having said that, I know two people who have had books published in the last couple of years; the first guy writes well, but is hesitant about what he wants to convey. The second guy's book sold well up here, but it's so bad it makes Jeffrey Archer and Jack Higgins look like Dickens and Tolstoy.

A lot of the success of writers is down to luck.

In terms of fiction, completely based on luck until the flash-in-the-pan success and the writer acquires a reputation. Agreed.

Was it Orwell who said all writers have to be vain and egotistical?

A good book can take 2 hours a night, for seven nights, out of a person's life. To set out thinking one's life is that interesting to thousands of people, does indeed come across as egotistical when you think about it. It's like saying 'LOOK WHAT I'VE DONE!' and 'AREN'T I INTERESTING!'

Writing about yourself, without vanity would mean vagueness, giving the reader nothing to grasp, or retract meaning from. Too much vanity would probably lead to the recording of uninteresting detail.

It would need a little luck to get that balance right.

I know this chap who started writing a book about the Victorian music hall's 12 years ago and when I last spoke to him in May he said he'd completed about a quarter of it so far.
