Free music gigs in Hyde park Circa 1960's

Post by Shelley Louise »

A colleague of mine was talling me about the free gigs that used to happen in Hyde park in the 1960s where bands like The Stones and Hendrix played.

Anyone go or remember them happening.

What other bands played?

This was the Stones concert in 1969

I went to this concert, mainly to see Family who were favorites of mine.

But I was also blown away by King Crimson who did an amazing set if I remember rightly. Their album "Court of the Crimson King" came out about that time.

Brain Jones of the Rolling Stones had died a few days earlier (he had already left the band due to drug problems) and Mick Jagger released a load of butterflies.

I stayed for only a couple of Stones numbers then left. After Family and King Crimson the Stones seemed very poor.

I cannot remember any of the other acts to be honest.

I also went to this Blind Faith concert in Hyde Park

I mainly went to it for Blind Faith and remember none of the other acts.

Blind Faith were a supergroup (the first?) made up of Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker from Cream, Stevie Windwood from Traffic, and Rik Grech from Family on Bass.

As I had been a great fan of Cream AND Traffic AND Family I was looking forward to seeing them.

To be honest cannot remember much about their set, but most of the tracks seem to be off their first album.

I seem to remember the band did not last that long, not even sure they released another album.

Saw the Stones - Blind Faith - Edgar Broughton Band but my fave was the Humble Pie set when Marriot and Frampton blew away the supposed headline act Grand Funk Railroad. Great Days.

No, he was Pisces.

Very strange how all these musicos and artists and entertainers you refer to as bipolar, and 98% of them are alcoholics or druggies. Maybe, just maybe, if they'd settled for a nice cup of tea they'd still be with us today.
