Rod Liddle (of The Sunday Times) was commenting on Catherine Tate and her Xmas Special this week. He reckons she?s crap ? a sentiment I would broadly concur with. I couldn?t face watching her Christmas Special since I find most of her characters simply repulsive, and I just didn?t want to feel repulsed on Xmas day of all days. However, she does do a fair chav bird ?Lauren?, and I did enjoy the sketch where Lauren is in class showing her latest chavy tattoo off to a classmate. It?s one of those particularly twatish ?Shaz Luvs Darren? type tattoos and as Lauren is proudly brandishing it the ?Darren? sort saunters in and ?chucks? her ? well, they had been an item for 24 hours and nothing lasts forever. Of course the cruelly scorned Lauren launched into a tirade of ?Am I bovverds? at then being lumbered with the indelible expression of her love for ?Dazza?. Ah, Chavs, don?t ya' just love ?em? They?re such thick fuckers (on the whole).
Anyhow, I digress. Here?s what Rod had to say ?
?Look ? don?t get me wrong. I?m a normal bloke who enjoys a good bit of bigotry and racism just as much as the next fellow, all the more so if the, uh, community being lampooned is preternaturally sensitive and prone to screaming ?racist? at the drop of a hat.
But Catherine Tate?s dig at the Irish on her BBC Christmas special, now to be investigated by the thousand upon thousand lucratively paid employees of that relentlessly expanding quango, Ofcom, left me cold. What might an Irish person get for Christmas? Go on, guess! A balaclava! Like IRA terrorists used to wear! Help, someone strap up my ribs. According to the BBC, Tate is a ?comedy genius?. The definition of ?genius?, then, has slipped a little since the days of Leonardo Da Vinci.
Tate?s show consists of a seemingly endless recitation of numbingly familiar catchphrases that were not very funny in the first place. The same woeful dross repeated week after week: humour for people with the IQ of a whelk. Am I bovvered? You should be, love ? you?re about as funny as Pakistan.?

Check out the Gervais thread, Officer.
Since the early 1990s, if not before, most comedy shows in this country have been catchphrase-based. The harder-edged stuff---things people may not appreciate as much, such as The Office, Brass Eye, Peep Show---has tried to push away from this, but the viewing public tend to want some form of comic soundbite they can put into a conversation: Am I bovvered, Suit You Sir, Lovely Jubbly, Oooh We're Laydees etc
Tate can be funny, but in the limited way those other popular shows are. For all that Python is filled with soundbites and quotable lines, they didn't do them every week, whereas The Fast Show and others do---and that's where they get their laughs.

Re: Catherine Tate – Funny?
I've only seen a few episodes -while in other peoples house, and they've happened to be watching- and I never cared for her humour. I do, however, like Little Britain, though the comedy is of a simular type (sketch-wise).

She was funny when she first started out on TV
she's like most so called comedians today recycling the same stuff over and over which gets boring and not funny after a while.
I never watched her xmas special glad to say.
I ve not looking forward to her been the new assistant in Dr Who
why the F the person in charge thought she would make a good assistant for the show i will never know.

Another comedy sketch show
I found myself in about 1990 getting thoroughly sick of the new talent on the block being given their own show with which they tried to repeat the successes of the past.came to the conclusion that unless the comedy was in the form of a drama I'd get my laughs live
I'lll take a decent comedy/drama like doc martin over any comedy sketch show

She is very talented. Some of her stuff is superb ..some less so..inevitable really.Christmas show 6/10 ish.
Re: Catherine Tate ? Funny?
I don't find her humourous in the slightest. Never had talent, doesn't have any now and will not have any in the future.

Re: Catherine Tate ? Funny?
No. As funny as French and Saunders, therefore as funny as Crimewatch or Panorama. And she will probably ruin Doctor Who.
Re: Catherine Tate ? Funny?
One trick pony (like Lidl Brittain), was funny once but not now.
