Wireless speed

Post by BeestonBoy »

Hey

Just set up my wireless router and am pretty chuffed with it. Except for the the speed. I have dropped from 2.3 meg (I know not break neck speed but it suited me for the price) to about dial up speed. This is still not a major problem because most of my on line time is spent browsing. But still it's a pain in the arse if I do want to download or view Youtube or (lets be honest) hard core porn!!

Now my ISP wrote to me last week saying that my connection speed was going upto 8 meg this month. So when this happens will my wireless speed increase? Or should I just fuck it off and run that fecking phone exstension back through the 'ouse?

I'm off up the wooden hill in a minute,so wont be able to look at this untill tomorrow night. So thankyou in advance.

Take care out there tomorrow

BB

What's your signal like, how far are you from the router, what are your walls made of (if in a different room to router), is your router near any large speakers, or anything else that can create a magnetic field, what's your speed when hard wired to the web?

Signal: Excellent/very good

How far away: Some times right next to the fecking thang

Walls: Big Victorian bricks (but pretty similar speed when in the same room)

Magnets: No sirey Bob (or in this case Sam)

Hardwire speed: 2.3 megs

Thankyou for looking in Sam. Really gonna have to go bed now,so please do not think i'm being rude if I don't reply to any other posts you make on this.

Thankyou

It sometimes needs to settle when you upgrade to 'so called max broadband' you need to leave it on for a while, if it's still slow it's an issue with the ports, what version of windows do you have? if it's xp you need to allow it through your firewall on the 'exceptions' list.

No problem BB.

Your routers manual should tell you what speeds it broadcasts info out, and your laptops receiver likewise. Nothing should be as low as dial-up though!

If the signals ok, and you're in the same room then I can only think that the router may be faulty. Try and get a friend to come round with his own lap-top and try it out. If that's slow too, it's the router. If another laptop is ok, then the problems your wireless receiver, or Windows hasn't configured the network up properly.

My virgin engineer (round to fix a different problem) told me that they are upgrading everybody at no cost to 20 meg this month. I don't think it's happened yet though.
