I've used these bulbs for 7/8 years with no problems

The news about them broke at the start of the week---seemed like a typical over-reaction to me, but probably involved a suitably over the top, let's frighten everyone to death headline.

I suspect the Beano is more trustworthy, and has more journalistic integrity, than Der Daily "Hurrah for the Blackshirts!" Mail.

Theres definitely a problem with the mercury content

The fact that its not been brought up does suggest that theirs a lot of collusion going on between govt & their creators

I think the worst thing about them is that their pathetic as a light compared to their predecessor especially in the bathroom.

I've not gone that route yet. Bought a couple of energy saving bulbs, and the light they give off is pathetic. But the normal ones are due to be phased out, so we may be left with no choice.

What ever the recommended replacment wattage
incandescent to fluorescent double it

I bought what they recommended onthe pack and burned big time

120w is about the starting point for decent light

If memory serves me correctly its the halogen downlights that are preferred for rooms with little or no natural light

In the end its a choice that you should make ignoring all the hype of cellebrities endorsing it

To think that this will save the planet is laughable

I save more by not having the hot water system turned on
so it can boil water that I wont use tomorrow

but its the only time i actually use soap and its only when i wash it off
1 minute at most

not like your 5/10/20 minute hot shower where you stand there thinking/singing/? ;-)and turning into a wrinkled prune

But the hot water is rather pleasant---and there are times I don't want to come out of the shower.
