Download YouTube video and convert to AVI

You need:

Firefox
UnPlug
Dr DivX

All are free and opensource.

Step 1.

Install UnPlug in the Firefox browser



Scroll down the page and find the "Install Now" link and click on it. Restart FireFox.

Step 2.

Now go to YouTube.

From the FireFox "Tools" menu, select "UnPlug" and you should be redirected to the UnPlug page where the download link for the video is.

You want the one where the type is "Flash Video Data".Click on the "Save" image and save as anythingyoulike.flv (the .flv is important).

Step 3.

Download and install Dr. DivX

Google for the following DLL files:

drffmpeg.dll and avdsp.dll

Unzip and put them in your Dr. DivX directory (default: c:\Program Files\DivX\DR. DivX 2.0 OSS\)

Step 4.

Start Dr DivX

Click on the "Open" button next to the "Input file(s)" box and load in your FLV file.

Simply select one of the "DivX Profiles" and then press "Encode".

Press the "Resume" button to start the encoding.

You can change the ".divx" file to ".avi" to make it into an AVI file if you want. If you cannot see the file extension, you can enable it in Windows by going into

Tools > Folder Options > View

and then deselecting the "Hide extension for known file types" option".



For Google video all you have to do is to download and rename the extension from .gvi to .avi

You cannot use this method for Metacafe video - if you ask nicely I might tell you but it's a real balls ache to do.

1. doesnt it have to be in mpeg4, so do i just renmae it mpeg4

2. even if i do, do this, i cant get it to import into itunes



Help, after all that downloading, it's taken about 3hours now, i come to the final hurdle and i keep falling down

OK.

1. Download 3GP converter

2. Unzip and execute the file, you will need to select "English" for the language

3. After selecting "English", then select "Model: MP4, for iPod" in the upper section of the 3gp Converter window. After that click the "Apply" button.

4. From here just select the "Output Directory" and drag and drop the .avi file that you wish to convert to the top section of the 3gp Converter window. After dragging and dropping the .avi file in to the 3gp Converter window, it will now start to convert the file for you.

5. After converting, 3gp Converter will automatically start up iTunes and place the newly converted file you just made in the play list window.

I know Red Kawa and I'm less than impressed with any of their software, sometimes they work, other times they suck ... mostly they suck.

The other thing about that is you get fucked when Youtube change code and then you have to wait for code monkeys programming 'C' for eon's so it will work again.
