Hearing[/] is a consequence of ears picking up vibrations made by sound waves.

lol, this could get messy, I was going to comment on why something can't exist only in a potential state but then realised I would have to start thinking about Newtonian equations.....it's Sunday...not doing it !nerd!

This is a take on "if a tree falls in a forest, and no-one is there to hear it fall, did it really make a sound?".

If a man says something in a forest, and no woman is there to hear what he said, is he still wrong ?

Nope.

Sorry for the olay(esque) wiki link, but I can't be arsed to get the dictionary out again.
"Hearing (or audition) is one of the traditional five senses, and refers to the ability to detect the vibrations of particles against the ear drum. In humans and other vertebrates, hearing is performed primarily by the auditory system: vibrations are detected by the ear and transduced into nerve impulses that are perceived by the brain."
'Sound' is what the brain hears.
'To hear' is the detection of sound-waves, or vibrations of atoms.
'Vibrating atoms' are the cause of sound, and essential for the hearing process.

If you still disagree then ask yourself this:

"If sound exists before it reaches the ear, and sound is what the brain hears, then why the need for an ear at all?" Evolution wouldn't waste energy on an ear if the brain could pick up and recognise sound straight from the air.

If you still disagree then a months worth of living with Wazza for you!
