Physical memory is the amount of ddr/sdram you have installed (the hardware). If you have 256mbs of ram then that is the amount of physical memory.

Virtual memory is -basically- hard disk space that the OS holds aside for when your physical memory gets full.

It's not as simple as what I've written, but that's basically the idea.

OS?

Yup, I think I've got that.

A while ago I had a message from Windows saying that my virtual memory needed upgrading and whilst the process was being done my laptop "froze" - albeit only for a short time, about 10 minutes.

OS = Operating System (or Windows XP in your case).

CPU = Computer Processing Unit

RAM = Random Access Memory

SDRAM = Single Data Random Access Memory

DDR = Double Data Random Access Memory

HD = Hard Drive

GPU = Graphics Processing Unit

You could go on all night, but the basics will get you by !happy!

By the way, programmes will be running pretty slow if you're using your virtual memory a lot, due to a lack of physical memory. This is because your RAM can send and recieve data from the processor a lot faster than from the hard disk.

Get yourself a gigabyte of new RAM.

Does Firefox take a long time to load?

OS is short for Operating System Trumpton ... keep up!!
PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

As I've got a laptop I thought it was very difficult and complicated to install new RAM?

No - it's very quick in fact when compared to IE7.

Installed.

Post by Trumpton »

OK Prof, I've installed it. I've subscribed to the US filter system. How do I go about to create my own blocking system? For example, how do I block the ads from this site? Some of them have already been blocked, but the ones under the BGAFD banner have not. !confused!

Prof. I'm getting the hang of this now. I've discovered that you can block individual adverts too - very impressive.

I've just been away from this site for a while and on my return I've discovered that the ads which I'd blocked earlier have reappeared. Does this mean that every time I visit this site for example I have to utilise the blocking procedure?
