Another option (though it would cost) would be to upgrade to the Steganos internet security suite, which will have it's own firewall and spyware programs.

I too use

AVG antivirus
Comodo firewall
Spyware Terminator

Between them they have kept me clean since I loaded this PC last July.

My only comment is the current tested release of Spyware Terminator 2.0.0.193 is demanding on memory. Partly the price to pay for being a running application rather than a scanner like adaware and spybot search & destroy.
A beta (on trial - could have bugs) version is about. One aspect of this update was to the reduce memory overhead. I'm waiting for the official release before updating.

There are a myriad of choices and what works for my PC probably wont exactly translate for yours

AVG seems to be the free anti virus weapon of choice, pretty sure I saw a link to a free years update to the professional version of it as well, if anybody is interested I will provide a link.
I use Spybot Search & Destroy for rooting out spyware but I don't think it has ever found ANYTHING apart from the usual mozilla cookies etc. but can't find any alternatives to it.
PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

So, for someone like me who's only got 256MB of RAM it'll be a heavy user?

256MB, your lappy must be a bit slow booting and the hard drive must be taking a battering as virtual memory.

You really do need more - or to your other post a new lappy.

Just for Windoze, laptop utilities like touchpad & processor speed control, AVG-antivirus, Comodo Firewall, Spyware Terminator and a few open Windows of Firefox right now I'm using 423MB. Spyware Terminaor accounts for 50MB of that.

I have 512MB in this lappy - maximum it will take. It had 256MB and another 256MB was ?12 on eBay.

I will be buying another lappy soon - probably around April/May time (finances permitting). The Prof has given me a few suggestions as to what to buy. Yes, you're right I do need more RAM.
