Mind you I'm sure I saw his name on a few executive producer credits in recent years.

A case of...sit back and watch others take the heat for awhile maybe. so it looks like he is still very much active.

The most recent directing stuff he's done has been for the Masters Of Horror series for Showtime in the States. Series one and two are available on DVD here in the UK. A selection of horror directors old and new are given an hour's slot to direct. As well as Carpenter there's Joe Dante, Dario Argento, John Landis, the usual suspects. I saw Carpenter's effort for the first series and I thought it was lame but the one he's done for the second is supposed to be very good. Seems like the only horror director from the 70s who investors are prepared to bank on for theatrical release is George Romero. Reviews for his upcoming Diary Of The Dead are very positive.
