Mate of mine works in a very senior advertising job and he says if you want to sell anything in Italy you put a scantily clad woman or man in the add and hey presto!! We Brits are getting back to Mary Whitehouse levels of prudeness.

What I can't understand about advertisements in the UK is that it's perfectly acceptable to show male buttocks in an advert, but not female buttocks?

what I find bizarre about this is the fact that no-one at woollies had heard of Lolita before or knew what it was about!! Have they lived under rocks all their lives?

It's going crazy in this country with paranoia. These twats get hysterical about a subject like a childs bed/ study ensemble or a Ryanair ad. Why don't these wankers get hysterical about something important like, the fact that most parents in this country, dread their offspring going out at night in case they are stabbed to death!

Woolworths are now said to be considering the withdrawal of the following products:

1] A "doctor's outfit", consisting of a white coat, plastic stethoscope and rubber syringe, under the brand name Shipman.

2] A toy rifle, labelled "The Hungerford OK47".

3] A "tool set", simply consisting of a rubber hammer and a plastic screwdriver, under the brand name Yo Ripper.

4] A toy pistol bearing the words "Dunblane Special" along the barrel.

Apparently Woolies are experiencing financial difficulties and are having to close a number of their shops.

I think that in Europe they are not as twisted and wierd as we are and so "Lolita" in the context of a childs bedroom ensemble means no more than, "Young"

For those who may not be aware, it was simply a picture of some foxy female (quite obviously age 20-something) wearing a short pleated skirt and a school-style blouse and tie advertising autumn breaks at the "the sexiest back-to-school prices" - followed by a list of offers along the lines of "Alicante: 19 Pounds" (or whatever).

The ad got pulled following a deluge of complaints that it was "advocating sex with schoolgirls" or some such bollocks.

I don't know whether to envy or pity folk who have nothing else to worry or complain about in life than adverts.

You know: those "Liberal Fascist" NuLabour types for whom the worst crime imaginable is to "offend" some minority or other, so as a result they think that the rest of us need to be told how to speak and even what to think. All for the "greater good of society" of course.

Case in point: these ads.

Out of a total population of - what - 60 million-odd, let's say there are 600 complaints in total.

That means 600 people who are "offended", as against 59,999,400 who either (a) think these ads are pretty clever or (b and most likely) couldn't give a toss either way, and didn't even make such an association until some policially correct twat pointed it out to them.

But of course those 600 have to be pandered to and indulged so that they won't be "offended" any more - instead of simply being told to go and get a fucking life.

It's all bollocks.
