Munich air crash. Sick of hearing about it.

Post by SID THE CYNIC »

Is anybody else out there sick of all the out-pouring of 'grief' at the 50th anniversary of this crash.

All this bollock about 'how good they could have been....' ' he'd have played for Ingerland....' sob sob sob. There even been some mention of the '66 World Cup.

Yes it was a tragic crash, but we're putting footballers way up on high again.

One things a blessing though, if it had been a Liverpool team involved in that accident, the wailing and moans of their communal 'greiving' would have been unbearable.

Oh God.. it's 20 years next yr since Hillsborough.

I may leave the country to avoid it.

As much as I loathe united these days, as a Mancunian and a City fan the Munich disaster was a major tragedy for Manchester as most of those lads were local to the area. Hence the reason Mancunians would like to pay their respects on the anniversary. We don't go on about it every year even if united's marketing men feel the need to exploit it now and again. This coming Sunday's derby clash should give the city an opportunity to finally give the anniversary the proper and final respect it deserves. I just hope I don't see replica Munich shirts on sale on Monday morning. That would be an insult more than any anti-united chanting through the minute's silence.

I can understand people getting fed up with it by its association. However, like I said, its really for the locals to pay some respect to, unfortunately for the rest of the country the nationwide press are making a mountain out of it. Anyway I would think a lot of football fans don't know the background to what happened so maybe at least they can learn about it.

RIP Busby Babes
RIP Frank Swift (City & England legend)

If Man U don't market the shirts it will be a real surprise. They are a business, not a football club. They really need the cash to keep the banks off their backs.

My dad saw this Man U team play only a few weeks before Munich. He reckoned Duncan Edwards was the best player he had ever seen. Better than Charlton, Best or any other UK born player.

Whether they would have beaten the 1960-65 Madrid team is another matter.

Just how good were some of these 50's 60's players? Take the example of George Best. When he died the news buletins showed a montage of his 'genius' goals. I remember seeing a tap in that left the mighty Northampton goalkeeper on his backside and a goal at Wembley when he rounded the keeper to slot into an empty net (never seen that before!). Basically I thought to myself is that it? Is that the great George Best? Show me a tape of George Best and a tape of Tierry Henry and id watch Henrys goals everytime, and im not even an Arsenal fan! For me the game of football wasnt really created until the 1970 Brazil side came to the fore, since then the likes of Cruyff, Zico, Maradonna, Van Basten and more recently Ronaldhino and Uniteds Ronaldo have lit the game up. As for your 50's and 60's football, you can keep it!

Errrrm......

I'm not an old fuddy-duddy looking back (only 32). But even I can see that if you gave Henry or Ronaldo a pitch that looked like the diggers had been in, a brick of a ball and miners boots to play in -along with no protection from the ref- we'd see if Ronaldo and Henry could create something special.

You can't compare era's.

Eamon Holmes presented the a commerative program today on ( I guess) Man united Tv, They opened the " Munich Tunnel" at Old Trafford, Duncan Edwards was a very sad loss imo, he should heave been the England captain in the 66 World Cup.

Edwards would have been the greatest player of all time- and yes, he would have been only 31-32 in 1966; and wouldn't have retired until c. 1971.
