?I reckon my commentator knows a lot more about statistics than yours!?

Oh no he doesn?t!

Regarding which survey means what. We could go on all night quoting statistics, surveys, and figures to back up out respective stances. The fact is that, contrary to what you say, no one really agrees if crime is rising or falling. There are differing views, as well as the celebrated ?Lies, dam lies, and statistics?. Of course the Police, the Government, and their apologists, will have an interest in spinning the figures to make it look like they?re doing a great job and everything is just fine. While their opponents will want to put a spoke in that wheel by highlighting real cases of criminal infamy - and thereby stoking up the masses. I guess what really matters is how safe real people feel. It will be their own experiences, as well as those of family and friends, and indeed reports in the media, that determine how secure people feel, both in their own homes, and walking the street.

Here, have a look at this alternative survey/report that generally contradicts what you are saying.

Warren, do you think the media should be censored and prevented from reporting crime, anti social behavior, and social trends that embarrass the state? Should they only be allowed to report surveys that reflect well on the government and it?s social/economic policy ? like maybe - ?Tractor Production At Records High! Government Instructs Citizens To Rejoice In The Street!'

Oh but the perception of crime rising does matter. It matters a great deal to political parties. Which is why you, and NuLabour, are so defensive and uncomfortable when the issue is aired. Those pesky voters out there think that the next time some retards drop a concrete block from a motorway bridge, or some council estate chavs beat a resident to death, or a ?gangsta? fatally stabs their son for his mobile phone it could be them. Because hey, it could. The POSIBILITY ?statistically speaking? will just not go away, and that?s enough to terrify ordinary Joe Average who?s noticed the chavs hanging round the bus stop have been getting lairier and lairier of late and no one in officialdom seems to have the slightest interest in doing anything about it or putting them in their place.

All a matter of perpsective gents

If you reside in a green leafy suburb estate with security patrols your going to feel fairly safe, secure & removed

If you live on the local estate where the riff raff are running amok your not no matter which direction the crime stats are heading

I agree with Wazza about there being an irrational fear of crime
Crime stats say its on the decrease

The simple answer is 2 fold

1. Obviously more policing for trouble areas

2. If your not working then your studying

No ifs buts or maybes

The welfare system unfortunately is seen by some as a way of having a good time but in reality its called existing below the poverty line

Only morons settle for this which is why many turn to crime to supplement it
Break that cycle and the battle might be winnable
Lose it and say good night nurse in another generation

rant ends...this red is going down rather nicely...hope I'm waffling as per usual

"Yes. But I am glad you have finally admitted it is mere perception."

But it's not mere perception. It is very real - as Gary Newlove found out much to his cost.

Thankfully, the chavs who murdered him have today been sentenced to life. But nowadays there are chavs just like them with little or no inhibition committing any type of crime on most every council estate throughout the land.

As I type this post there are two or three chavs pulling my neighbor?s dry stonewall down and rolling the larger stones into the middle of the lane. It's almost dark and some weary traveler might crack his car sump on the rocks, or worse. In times past I would have gone out given them a good kicking (if I could catch them) and put the fear of 'badass' into them. But now I think, fuck it, they may have got a gun or a knife, and if I do 'put them straight' it will be me who the state leans on. So I'm just going to metaphorically walk on by, like many others are choosing to do nowadays. The country is going to the dogs and if no one else cares or can be arsed to do anything about it, why should I?

"it is obviously impossible to win an argument about whether real crime is rising (or just the perception of it) by quoting any individual cases."

Why not? If they?re real cases, they?re real cases.
