Last nights Bafta Results??

Post by crofter »

So can somebody please explain to me how "Atonement" can win Best Film yet cannot win Best British Film (which was won by "This Is England"). Something just doesn't add up, surely if you are Best Film you must also be Best British Film??
I think the organisers decided they would just share the prizes out this year to keep everybody happy.
PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

This always happens. It's very rare indeed for one film to win a stack of prizes from one award ceremony.

BAFTA does that every year. It's very rare for one film to dominate, the way they do at the Oscars. So you have the best film not having the best director or the best screenplay. It's a way of rewarding good movies without it being a one film lovefest.

This Is England will never compete with the Hollywood favourites, but the recognition will help. The award for Control's screenwriter is another example.

But some people would regard atonement as an establishment favourtie, where maybe their looking for credibility by going for the indie vote in this is england which imo was film of the year along with control and lives of others.....

Duff Sound.

I watched it up until the obits and I noticed that the sound was poor, even Wossy passed a comment about it amongst his badly written "gags".

Maybe best British film is about the source of the production financing ? I agree though that Baftas were little more than the industry 'signposting' what they want you to see. It was obvious the way that there was wild cheering everytime 'Atonement' was mentioned that it was due to win something.

Well that is kinda my point wzr, Atonement was in the first category up for an award "Best British Film" along with these:
The Bourne Ultimatum
Control
Eastern Promises
This Is England (we have a winner)

so if it cannot win this category how can it triumph as the overall "Best Film"?? Something not quite right here.

Don't get me wrong I think it is the best film of the year by a country mile and will sweep the board in the Oscars (if it goes ahead). Just hope wee Keira gets the her just reward alone with James McAvoy.

Nice article explaining the Baftas and the increasingly blurry definition of British Cinema.

btw - of course Atonement was going to win. It's pure middle brow, middle class twaddle.
