Re: Warning - bipolar alert........
Like nearly all mental conditions, bipolar disorder is spectral - it varies from the mild at one end to severe at another. Also to complicate matters there are about three subtypes of bipolar and people with bipolar sometimes have other mental disorders as well. For some people bipolar gives them a creative edge and they manage tobuild a whole career on it (Spike Milligan being a good example) but for others they just become a nervous wreck - it depends on the individual.
You cant say for sure that someones success was entirely because of bipolar, they still had to implement the success. Also you cant use mental illness as an excuse for wrong doing for example Ian Huntley had a personality disorder but we didnt let him off from murdering the Soham girls.

This is an illuminating program about the curious relationship between the manner and style of the "mad genius" and a range of disorders that seem to affect him or her. Tackling the issue from an almost chicken-or-egg approach, the program tries to answer the intriguing question of which fuels what - are mad geniuses prone to such ailments or are the ailments part of what unlocks the genius buried within?
The pianist Nick Van Bloss, whose career was destroyed by a mid-performance attack of Tourette syndrome, is the focus of much of the investigation, though it also touches on autism, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The result is both moving and revealing and leaves the viewer with much to ponder long after the credits have rolled.

Re: Warning - bipolar alert........
That is what I've been wanting you to address for weeks. As you now say that a bipolar condition cannot excuse people's behaviour, why do you then feel the need to tell us when someone who goes off the rail is bipolar?

Re: Warning - bipolar alert........
Because it explains a lot of their behaviour. People with bipolar are often risk takers as well as having a creative edge. For example trying to build a career in show biz is risky. For this and other reasons (such as a dysfunctional childhood) a sizable proportion of people in show biz have bipolar.
For some people in showbiz with bipolar their career does well but in other cases it could sink miserably - the risk having failed. It is also a common reason why pop stars become drug/alcohol addicts in the depressive phases of bipolar, ref for example Robbie Williiams. Other well known bipolar sufferers are Freddie Starr and Frank Bruno.

Okay, I officially give up.
Next: ob-com and why a piece on celebs is inevitably followed by the revelation of their mental condition.

Re: Warning - bipolar alert........
I have already explained that someone's personality disorders is an intrinsic part of their existence. How someone behaves, what sort of career they have, whether they indulge in substance abuse etc etc depends largely on their own personal cocktail of personality traits/disorders.
It is not a simple subject and you cant make sweeping generalizations - much depends on an individuals make up. If you took away all the mental disorders from many entertainers, many of them would cease to be able to entertain. Many of them are addicted to the attention they receive from the audience on the stage and feel like nobodies when they are off stage so they become addicted to the public limelight.
