And it is that opinion - sadly echoed by the majority - that means the power to accuse someone of these crimes (and realistically, those accusations could be falsely levelled at any one of us if we were unlucky enough to encounter someone bent, for whatever reason, on 'crying wolf') is perhaps one of the greatest threats anyone could face in these times. Just being accused of a 'kiddie crime' is enough to wreck lives and careers. Without prejudice, try and take a less emotive angle and let them be tried by the court and found either guilty or not-guilty by the court - there are plenty of cases of people being charged with this type of offence (Matthew Kelly & David Jones being examples that spring to mind) and subsequently found either not guilty or the case dropped. Even Jonathan King, who was convicted and served time for his much-publicised apparant misdemeanors, has been granted right to appeal by the European Court of Human Rights, and they do not grant these expensive appeals unless they feel there is a big chance the conviction will be found 'unsafe', so all is often not as it may seem. The reality often is these cases are as much a 'trial by media' as they are a trial by court, perhaps the ultimate power in the 'build 'em up, knock 'em down' media culture we have allowed to develop.

They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

Likening the downloading of a few pictures, disagreeable though that that maybe, to abusive paedophilia is a trick people have fallen in order to allow the state to criminalize (and thus control) people. When all's said and done, it's looking at a picture and mankind's curiosity with the taboo and the violent (from photographs of child abuse - anyone who lumps it in as 'porn' is doing is all a dis-service- or watching someone's execution or torture in an Islamic state) is, whether good or bad, a natural state.
Likening Chris Langham or even Gary Glitter (whatever their reasons for doing what they did) to dangerous paedophiles (Roy Whiting, for instance) is losing grasp of reality, it's like suggesting Amy Winehouse is as responsible for dealing crack just because she smokes it.
I don't wish to appear in support of ay kind of child abuse - I clearly aren't - but I do feel should be made aware of when they're being 'played' by the state and the media - how fantastic would it be for the powers-that-be if a nation were all in fear of instant disgrace simply by an accusation, how to instantly tarnish a reputation and possibly destroy a life, whether proved or not. It's practially considered a done deal when someone is accused (and don't the police work well with the media when this happens?), perhaps the next step will be to make it a 'strict liabilty' offence? I'm sure the public would back that up, not realising what it could mean....

Worth noting that Ian Brady recently had a cache of sleeping pills confiscated. Not a year goes by when he doesn't plead to be allowed to die. For a monster like him, the continuing hell of a life where he can't get out to do what he wants to is a real punishment. Death may be final, but it's nothing in comparison with a long, wasted wait for it in a cell.
