British Made Lager

Now I know this is subjective but why is British lager bought in the supermarket so crap?Cant we make it like they do a few miles over the channel?Despite their best efforts to put lots of foreign words on the labels,the reality is they're made by the multinationals in places like Burton on Trent.How hard can it be?For example,sip the IMPORTED Heinekin and it tastes like a decent beer.Drink it against the home made stuff and you'll see what I mean.In the 1980s and before, Grolsch used to be made in Holland...now its gone the same way as the others.Look at the smallprint of these cans and bottles to see what I mean.If you want a decent made lager buy ones made in Spain,France,Holland,Czech republic,Denmark etc.A bit more I know but the British made stuff is pants by comparison.

All lager bar the Artois are piss. The Artois family are champagnes posing as lagers.

But it is the same regarding Guinness. London Guinness had a f..awful finish and aftertaste; Dublin is malty, smooth and sweet.

So many people ended up going for bottled 'white label' Dublin Guinness that eventually they just shut down the London site and cashed in on the property market!

I have never known the same drink taste so different depending on the place of production.

Stating the obvious,i know but the lager over here is watered down more,even the one's in Supermarkets and as mcfister rightfully said tastes nothing like if you buy it from it's Country of origin.

It seems we're being ripped off wherever we go.And they've got the cheek to say we have a 'binge drinking' problem !shocked!

Ah!Sam Smiths,there's a name that takes me back to my home town of Selby.A very good pub called The Cricketers Arms is a Sam Smiths pub selling excellent lager and bitter,also superb food.Think i'll have to sort out a visit soon having had my memories jogged by this thread!

Probably because we have the British attitude of "How cheap can we make it for, how much can we get away with selling it for?"

Not helped by the British buyer not wanting to pay for quality, either.

I personally stick to the old amber nectar bottles of Miller Draft or Kronenberg 1664 myself Miller pints aint so hot when bought in draught but the pints of 1664 are pretty good as well. Carlsbersg is also a decent draught pint but piss poor in bottles.
Tennents is about the best British Lager and anybody that drinks that utter pish Carling must be really desperate ...

I also remember when I was in Torremolinos on my hols and all the pubs over there had Harp Lager, now Harp Lager if you came across it in Britain ain't exactly the best brew - but this stuff because it was imported had to be a certain strength so was completely different - it was total amber nectar and cheap as chips.
So I think it isn't the problem that us Brits make bad lager just that it is really watered down by the powers that be.

In my lager-drinking days, it tended to be that lovely German beer Lowenbrau.
