The reality is that a lot fresh food is kept in cold storage before it hits the supermarket shelves

Frozen vegetables are actually more likely to be fresher than their counterparts

Guess what the richer your area the fresher/better quality your food will be
even at the same supermarket chains

About the only way to guarantee fresh food that wont start to spoil is to buy the food when its in season. At least then you have a chance of getting some produce that has been picked recently

Supermarkets have a nasty habit of pushing the envelope for all goods which are labelled best before

What gets me is why is organic food, healthy drinks and eco friendly fuel always so much more bloody expensive. If they want to promote better health and a better environment why don't they put their money where their mouth is and subsidise it.Surely in the long run it would be more cost effective !shrug!

Very sensible Heidi,Trouble is that the people that make up these initiatives, sadly don't have any sense. It's all another money making thing and dictating to people that healthy eating is the only way.

All part of the nanny state we live in.

I shop pretty much every day and try to buy as much local (ie UK, not flown in from Chile, New Zealand, etc) produce that's in season (a few items, such as bananas, notwithstanding).

What I eat on any given day is dependent on what I find in the shops that takes my fancy and looks like it may taste good.

I've never had to throw any food away because it's gone bad, and although I'll tend toward the pricier products I reckon I spend less than most people overall because of the lack of waste due to buying small and often. My average spend on shopping in a week is about ?35.00 - ?40.00

The greatest sadness is that there are no longer as many markets as their used to be (thanks to supermarkets) unlike in places like France and Italy where even the smallest village has a well stocked, regular open-air market selling fresh, tasty, cheap local produce.

Ahh,gone are the days of the family butcher, fishmonger, greengrocer etc.

Also more annoying when you're nearest Supermarket is miles away from your village.
