match of the day

Post by tommy dickfingers »

I just watched the arsenal v liv highlights and watched the game live on tv this afternoon and the summerisers never gave liverpool any credit at all for their part in the game, the performances of crouch, carra and a debutant plessis who i knew about before,it was all about arsenal and how they didn't play well and should have had a penalty for lucas's vicious assault on fabregas.

Fabregas went down a little too easily didn't he ? Shouldn't he have had more resolve to get to the ball instead of playing percentages and going down for the penalty ?

The media go out of their way to praise Arsenal. There was a three year hiatus between Man Utd's last two premiership wins between which they won the Carling Cup and FA Cup which were belittled as scant consolation and not good enough. Arsenal are now up to four seasons and they've won the FA Cup and lost in the Champs League Final (ok, they're still very much in the competition this season). When it's Fergie and Man Utd the press delight in having a pop but they turn a blind eye when it's Arsenal and Wenger seems to have limitless time to produce a championship winning team.

The press coo about what a great side Arsenal are, but a third place finish is the same as they achieved last year. When it's Benitez, Grant, Ferguson they'll delight in talks of crisis and underachievement, but Arsenal and Wenger are untouchable.

Am I alone in thinking what's spoiling my beloved game isn't all the money but the fact that every game is played on eggshells.

What started off with players diving has evolved to fouls being given for physical contact (much derided by commentators) and has now become a situation where any contact has resulted in both players automatically stopping play anyway to look towards the ref for a decision on whether the tackle was fair.

And don't get me started on defenders raising her hands to claim offside. Logically it is impossible for any defender to judge offside - they are either watching the ball being played or the attacking player's position, never both. Right or wrong, the linesman (sorry, ref assistant) is the best person to judge.

And Jonone has another point - Strikers have to score regardless of minor impediments. If me and a rival saw Harmony Hex at a bar and we both made a beeline for her, it would take more than a slight tug on my shirt to stop me - it would have to be a full blown wrench backwards to the ground!

The FA needs to put its foot down, whether it's about respecting the ref, goal-line technology etc. They seem to fear change but the fact of the matter is the game has changed since my childhood.

Case in point - there was a time when a winning team would waste time by having defenders and goalkeepers pass each other the ball till the end - the result was the pass back rule. And there was at least a season in the eighties where a goalkeeper couldn't advance more than 3-4 paces after picking up the ball - a rule quickly scrapped. And what the hell is the off side rule now.

Sorry for the rant.
