I want to get my Golden Oldies onto my computer. I have my 1980s films I on VHS and I want to get them onto my computer. I have a professional VHS recorder and I need a scart to USB. Can anyone tell me if it is possible to get a Scart to VHS cable?

Mike,

You don't understand. You can't go from scart to USB. You have to digitize the analogue footage first. This is what you need (ADV300)

Play your old movie into the digitizer via the 'S' input if possible (if not the composite input will have to do). From there you take out the digitized footage via a 'Firewire' lead to your computer and an appropriate video capture program. Then, when you've got it into your computer, you'll probably need to do a bit of colour correction and sound level adjustments to spruce the old footage up.

I'd do it for ya' but my time would cost more than the analogue/ digi converter.

Hi Dibble,
First of all let me say how chuffed I am that you trying to help me. I do have a firewire connection on my Asus notebook, Vista but I thought that it was just DV out and not in! I have a VHS capture software and an S input but that is for Super VHS and this is analogue. Do you think that I can go in on the firewall?

Barcode is correct Mike, invest in a Video to DVD recorder, a decent one is about ?120, then copy your precious tapes onto disc.

You basically need to upscale the video output from your VHS machine to DV or HD. Transferring to DVD is an option but means compressing to a lower quality than DV.
The simplest way is to play the tape onto your computers hard drive via a camera set to VCR mode and the computers capture settings set to non-controllable device. If you can introduce a time base corrector into the equation you could improve things ( some decks have them built in) in any event once on your computer you can enhance the colour/sound etc as has been suggested.

yes, mine is, but you can also get all-in-one machines that have no need for scarts etc, a bit 'basic' but again, worth it. I saw one at ASDA at ?94 on Monday, a basic model, but does what its supposed too!
