Helen Duncan was in fact held and charged under the "Witchcraft act" but she was never tried for being a witch. She was really charged with little more than being a fake.
The Witchcraft act was used as it was the only law at the time that could be used. Niether Helen Duncan or Jane Rebecca Yorke (tried under the act in 1944) were ever called witches,let alone rounded up in the street by a baying mob and burned alive!!
