Let's hear it for petrol (and diesel) protesters! - Whayhey! Whayhey! Whayhey!

T' fuck wiv' Broon and his mob! They're shafting us big style - taxing our petrol to feather the nests of their public sector pals and to sweeten up immigrant communities and the underclass in the hope of their support come Election Day. The people who generate the nation's wealth - those who make things and sell things - are being taken to the cleaners by Broon and his Islington pals. They're laughing up their sleeves at us. Happily, it looks like NuLabour has finally been rumbled.

Absolutey support any form of protest - as we the people are fiscalling being brought to our knees, so should we bring the whole country to a grinding standstill. Our 'cost of living' is now far too excessive, and more importantly a lot more than other EU states & the U.S, Aus etc. We are being resolutely shafted

They're locking them up today, they're throwing away the key...I wonder who it be tomorrow, you or me?

This country is unable to control the price of crude with the world wide price at $135 a barrel and a forcast it could even rise to $200.
Mind you they should postpone the next tax increase as the tax revenue from the increase should pay for that.
Also it does not help that people are still doing the school run in their 4by4s

Yes our "cost of living " is increasing but if the public want a NHS and a education system it as to be paid with somehow. Don't forget the US does not have a NHS and in many countries you have to pay for schooling.

It does not help that the Iraq war has so far cost in the tune of 3 trillion$ . A number i can't imagine. Mind you Bush, Chaney and their cronies most of which are ex oilmen must be laughing all the way to the bank with their companies making billions of extra profits. Has this been a hidden agenda by them?. It would not surprise me
This is why i blame Blair and the Labour party for getting conned into getting involved. And i have always been a Labour voter.

By the way i have given up my car and now use public transport

That's all well and good - but it doesn't alter the fact that something like 70% of the forecourt price of a litre is pure TAX. Also, you pay VAT on the gross price (i.e. the litre price with the tax already added), so in effect you're also paying tax on tax!!

That argument is usually the first excuse trotted out by politicians - but it doesn't wash at all.

But just look at the state of the UK's education system and the NHS!!! Not exactly value for money in my book. Another lame, pat excuse for bad government and financial waste, I'm afraid.

>>

I agree with you on that: They can find astornomical sums for Iraq, yet can't stump up a (by comparison) relatively modest few tens of millions to keep post offices open and eliminate fuel poverty among pensioners.

>>

A noble gesture - and I'm betting that you live in a large town where buses are plentiful and / or that you have a handy bus / train service within a short walk of where you live. There are many valid reasons (and I'm NOT talking about short school runs in 4x4s) why - for many people - giving up a car is simply not an option, even if they wanted to.

Those folk who believe that the rise in petrol prices is simply the fault of the Government are being terribly naive.

The simple fact is that there is a huge demand for this 'product', and whenever this happens the price of the product will balloon at an artificial rate.

Remember when DVD players first came out??....They cost an absolute fortune, because every bugger wanted one, and there wasn't that many on the market....Now everybody has one, and every bugger has one to sell, you can pick them up for next to nothing.

The only way to bring down petrol prices is to simply stop buying the stuff....the oil complanies will eventually have a surplus of the stuff, and will reduce the price to get shut...SIMPLE.

Unfortunately, this will never happen because the people of this country are too reliant on their vehicles, and are too lazy to seek out other alternatives of transport......cue all the 'public transport is crap' replies...lol........I'm refering to dickheads who ferry their children half a mile down the road in their 4x4's to school or ballet lessons, etc......

The price of oil on the global markets may not be the fault of the government - but the fact that around 70 per cent of the forecourt price of petrol is tax IS the government's doing.

That has a knock-on effect on the whole economy.

You want to talk about naivity? Well for one thing, claiming that supply and demand on the oil markets is influenced to a major degree by "the school run in 4x4s" (another hackneyed, lame argument) is just being silly - you really need to take the issue up with the Chinese and the Indians first and foremost.

Good on the petrol protesters.

However, I am against a windfall tax on petrol companies. First, it will not achieve anything because they will only pass it onto you, the consumer, in the end. Why should successful business be taxed for being successful? Does not make sense to me?

This labour government have wasted so much taxpayers money, see my post in NuLabour Luvvies Trounced at Crewe!. They have invested in wrong things such as buildings not people, wasted massive amount of money on useless IT projects such as ID cards, spent loads of cash on an unlawful war. I?m not saying the Tory?s or for that matter the Lib Dems would be any better but the direction this Labour government is taking us is unforgivable.
