The film 'Deliverance' probably did a lot to publicize anal sex as a practice although in the context of this film it was a deviant practice. It also featured in 'Straw Dogs'.

Neither of these were good PR for anal sex because of the element of force and punishment. If not a deviant practice it is seen as transgressive which is part of its appeal.

It's been practised by Africans as a means of contraception for hundreds of years. Although now they've seen the light in the food aid and swapped to the other side. Anal these days is reserved for fun.
