I don't have much truck with either Paedo's or coppers, but here's some food for thought... many police forces have a way of dealing with officers that 'cross the line' (not necessarily by doing someting illegal, more by standing up for themselves, face not fitting etc) and that is to criminalize them. I can personally think of 3 coppers I've known (genuine nice blokes, hence their face not fitting) who were actually fitted up by their colleagues (and one case involved an officer with 30 years service about to retire who had never done anything wrong).
One thing to remember with this sort of crime is how easy it would be to infect a hard-drive with images - and that could happen to anyone whether or not they're in the police

I'm not saying this man was not guilty of his crimes, but he hadn't been found guilty or admitted any guilt and besides, if looking at dodgy images is enough to get you stabbed to death by some morons with nothing else to occupy their minds then that is another reason this country is up shit creek without a paddle

It is, in a scary way, the ultimate 'thought crime' - someone who isn't popular can get accused of having dirty pics of kids, and not only do they face criminal prosecutio they are also in danger of being murdered - thereby with one arrest or even just accusation you can ruin a life instantly.
What a pleasant world we live in.

While not in any way condoning or excusing paedophiles in any way, shape or form, given the hysteria (because there's really no other word for a lot of it) about child sexual abuse that exists in society today, I don't think it's any exaggeration to say that paedophilia is the "witchcraft" of the 21st century.

By which I mean it doesn't take very much at all (just the slightest whiff of suspicion, the flimsiest of accusations or even just looking a bit "weird") for Plod to start kicking doors in and / or baying, banner-waving mobs to gather outside the home of the local oddball.

Like you say, even a mere accusation of having an unhealthy interest in kids can ruin a life nowadays.
